The Politics Of PR – Undergraduate Tim Jones gets a flavour of the world of spin
UEA undergraduate Tim Jones recants his week’s work experience at Different PR
“Having just finished my first year studying Politics and International Relation at UEA, I was looking for some practice in communications within the real world. Thankfully, DifferentPR has shown me the ropes and taught me skills which I would never have learnt at university.
“Whilst studying at university I found myself much more interested in the practical area of how politicians uses the media to their advantage, rather than the works of J.S. Mill and Rousseau. After studying a module on communication last year, I knew that PR was a field I wanted to experience and eventually get into.
“When I first arrived at Different I was welcomed into a friendly office environment which quickly settled my nerves. My first day here included writing press releases, meeting clients and being shown how to work effectively in the world of communication.
“The diversity of clients at Different has allowed me to meet a wide range of people and write a variety of press releases. During my work placement I have learnt that not everything has to be written like an essay, allowing me to write pieces on a variety of topics, from charity fund raisers to school graduations.
“The highlight of my week has to working on TecTracer which ended up being covered by the BBC and ITV. First working on the press release then attending the launch of the device – during which I gained an insight into everything that goes into creating a story – has given me a new appreciation for whole process of the news cycle.
“I am extremely grateful to David and Different PR for giving me the opportunity to get involved in practical work and for teaching me the skills I will not only need for a future career in communication, but that will without doubt benefit me in all areas of life.”
